INTRODUCTION

Who we are.

Utu Kwanza works in pursuit of preserving human dignity and self-respect by primarily supporting both, convicted and unconvicted prisoners, as well as their families. The organization further works to aid the disadvantaged communities in Tanzania consisting of children, youth, women, and elders who are struggling to meet their basic needs due to poverty. Utu Kwanza strives to elevate the prisoners’ and remandees’ quality of life by maintaining human dignity and self-respect.

Areas of Focus

LEGAL AID

The organization facilitates the provision of legal aid in aim for each prisoner to be protected by and be liable to the law, while being educated about their inherit rights.

REHABILITATION

Prisoners shall be provided with opportunities to acquire the necessary skills that make the time spent in prison productive and a contribution towards self-improvement. This would be achieved by providing educational and vocational training sessions that support rehabilitation and encourage positive behavior.

Supporting women’s rights

Women and girls suffering through poverty shall be given access to the opportunities to reconstruct their lives and be socioeconomically empowered. The Organization is working to facilitate primary and secondary education in aim to eliminate the poverty cycle.

enhancing the healthcare system

Utu Kwanza strives to enhance the current standards of conduct in prison whereby there is a refined and adequate healthcare system that is inclusive of mental healthcare and hospital transfers to specialists in designated proper transport.

In addition, the Organization aims to provide sufficient antenatal care including medical checkups that can minimize the may risks of deliveries in order to ensure the health and safety of both, the baby and the mother.

TRAINING PRISON OFFICERS

The organization shall raise awareness about fair, equal and humane treatment of the prisoners by guiding the prison officers and the Government through lectures, training programs and campaigns.

supporting families & children born in prison

The families of remandees shall be assisted with a support system, hence the provision of transportation services for prison and conjugal visits, psychological counselling and financial assistance through grants. There shall also be a day care where the children’s needs would be attended to until the most suitable permanent placement for the child could be identified.

STABILITY FOR ELDERS

The organization shall create a stable living environment and a sense of community for the elders who are unable to meet their necessary needs, to eliminate homelessness. They shall also receive legal aid to ensure that they are receiving their rights.

the further disadvantaged communities

The organization recognizes the unmet needs of the disadvantaged community and therefore strives to provide assistance through the basic need aid centers. The healthcare clinic and orphanage would not only shelter children without parents and elders, but also temporarily assist the youth and women. Utu Kwanza believes in gender equality and the importance of opportunity. The aid centers shall begin with areas that have a high crime rate, whereby more families and children are affected with poverty, homelessness and have no access to education.
